Correlation Matrix


This is a correlation matrix of T7 phage proteins. It is related to mRNA.

Star Plot

This is a star plot of automobiles. Each star on this plot is representative of a different make of an automobile.

Mercator projection


This is the Mercator Projection which was widely used before the Mayor of New York outlawed it. He claimed that it was time to stop teaching our children that Greenland was the size of South America.

Waldseemüller map

This is the Waldseemüller map and it was published in 1507. This is one of the first maps to show North and South America. It also shows them as being separate from Asia.

Ptolemy's map

This is Ptolemy's map of the world. It was not a full map of the world but it was used by Christopher Columbus.

Catalan Atlas

This is only one of the maps from the Catalan Atlas. This one shows Europe and the Mediterranean in 1375.

Portolan chart


This is a Portolan chart, a map made during the Middle Ages and for mariners to navigate along coastlines. This chart is from around 1550 and from Italy.

Babylonian Clay Tablet map


This is a Babylonian clay tablet map and is also an early form of mapping. This map show Babylon at the center of the map, a common theme in early maps.

Codex Fejervary


This is the Codex Fejervary also a very early map form. This was made by the Aztecs and portrays the five directions of the Aztec universe. This is only one of many maps in a book made by them.

Cave painting

This is a cave painting that was made in Lascaux, France almost 16,000 years ago. This is one of the first type of maps known.

Statistical map


This is a statistical map of Scotland. It shows a land survey in 2005 and in particular derelict sites.

Bilateral graph


This is a bilateral graph showing Europe income, trade and transfers, Asian current accounts and net oil imports as a percent of U.S. gross domestic product. Notice the overlapping which makes this graph type unique.

Line graph

This is a line graph and is a type of geovisualization. This line graph is showing the recommended daily food servings for women.

Pie Chart

This image is of a pie chart, a type of geovisualization. This pie chart is showing the different coverings for areas of land in Hawaii. As you can see, most of it is sand and fossil reef.

Similarity matrix


This image is of a similarity matrix. This matrix is showing rRNA sequences for bacteria. This is a way for scientists to get a better look at the bacteria and will now be able to better characterize them.

Parallel Coordinate Graph

This image is showing a parallel coordinate graph. This can be used to view subsets of data and is part of geovisualization techniques.

Triangular plot

This image is of a triangular plot. This plot in particular is a scientific plot of Swiss patients with a particular disease. There are three different types.

This image is of a standardized choropleth map. The map is showing the standardized incidence ratios of low weight births by zip code in the state of New York.

This image is showing an isopach map. This was taken from the Kansas Geological Survey and shows Schaben Field and the Anadarko Basin.

This image shows isobars. This map was showing the current surface isobars and pressures at a weather station.

This is a set of images made to look animated. The individual images represent years. Th map is showing growth projections and the animation will show growth over the years between 1981 and projected 2025.

This image is of a flow map. A flow map is one that gives a sequence of events. This flow map is showing step-by-step how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Proportional Circle Map

This map shows a proportional circle map. This is of the Chicago population in 1990. Smaller circles represent smaller numbers of people while large circles represent large numbers of people in a given area.

Population Profile

This is a type of population profile know as the population pyramid. This is comparing two population pyramids. One is of Canada and the other is of Madagascar both in 2005.

This map shown is a bivariate choropleth map. This one in particular shows state votes in the 2008 election year using shading of the colors blue and purple.

Classed Choropleth map


This shows a classed choropleth map in which the classes are the Philadelphia census tracts for ages 65 and older.

Climograph

This image is of a climograph. This is showing climate and precipitation for an entire year in the city of Birmingham, Alabama. It also shows the average ("normal") temperature over the course of 30 years.

Cartogram


This image is of a cartogram. This particular map is showing the wheat production in the world. Notice how the contour lines are placed to show emphasis on the areas with the most wheat production.

This image is of a dot distribution map. This map in particular is from the 2000 census and it shows the population distribution in the United States. Basically the more white dots you see, the greater the population of that area.

Hypsometric Map

This image is a hypsometric map. This map is of France and they are using colors to try to show heights. You can also geographic features like rivers.

PLSS map

This image is showing a PLSS map of a root watershed stretching over southeast Minnesota and northern Iowa. The legend shows that on the map you can find Sections, Townships, Watershed, and County boundaries.

This image is of a choropleth map. It is showing a map of the United States and the shading shows the average price of gasoline in different areas. The lowest gas prices are in Wyoming where the highest is in California.

Box PLot


This image is of a graph of box plots. There are two box plots comparing the work output of two factories. Th box plots extend from the lowest value to the highest value with the middle of the box being the median of all the values.

Histogram


This image is of a histogram. This particular graph shows the number of grades on a mid-term exam. As you can see most people did well receiving a score of 90.

This is an image of doppler radar. This image was taken in 2005 and is of Hurricane Katrina. The doppler radar is popularly used by meteorologists to map out storms and other weather problems.

Black and white aerial photo


This is a black and white aerial photograph of Auschwitz-Birkenau, one of the most infamous Nazi Holocaust camps. The photo was taken in Poland on June 26, 1944.

Infrared aerial photo


This is an infrared aerial photo of Caranchua Bay in south Texas. The bay is mostly shallow water and is used for fishing, kayaking, and wading.

This cadastral map shows a land, house and adjacent plots in Amsterdam created by a group called Faeries, which is a nudist colony.
